Your pre-flight checklist
- Check eSIM support. Dial
*#06#. If an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. - Check it is unlocked. A phone locked to a carrier cannot use another carrier's eSIM. Ask your carrier if you are unsure.
- Install before you fly. You need an internet connection to download the eSIM, and a stable Wi-Fi at home is easier than airport Wi-Fi.
- Keep your home SIM for calls. Most phones are dual-SIM with an eSIM. Use the eSIM for data and switch data roaming off on your home line to avoid charges.
Why you should arrange data and payment in advance
Since 2022 many Western mobile carriers have restricted or stopped roaming in Russia, and Visa and Mastercard cards issued outside Russia generally do not work there. Buying an eSIM online before you travel solves both problems: you pay in advance with your normal card and arrive with working data.
Local eSIM vs an eSIM routed through another country
Some travel eSIMs carry your traffic through a gateway in another country. A local Russian eSIM, like ours, connects directly to the local network instead. In practice that means lower latency and local speeds, and your phone behaves like a local's. It also means you see the internet as people in Russia do, so some foreign apps and websites can be slow or restricted. Plan for that before you go, for example by downloading offline maps and key documents.
If your eSIM does not connect
- Make sure the eSIM line is turned on in Settings (Cellular or SIMs).
- Set the eSIM as your cellular data line.
- Turn data roaming on for the eSIM line if your phone asks for it.
- Toggle airplane mode on and off, or restart the phone.
- Open the network list and select Beeline or MTS manually.
- Check the eSIM was fully installed and not deleted.
- Still stuck? Message support on WhatsApp with your order number.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install the eSIM after I arrive in Russia?
Yes, as long as you have Wi-Fi, for example at your hotel. Installing before you fly is easier and means you are connected on landing.
Does eSIM work on iPhone?
Yes, on iPhone XS and XR (2018) and newer, as long as the phone is carrier-unlocked. Check with *#06# for an EID number.
Do I lose my home number if I use an eSIM?
No. The eSIM adds a data line. Keep your home SIM active for calls and codes, and turn off data roaming on the home line.
Is a Russian eSIM faster than roaming?
A local eSIM connects directly to the Russian network, so it avoids the extra hop and cost that roaming adds.
What if my eSIM still does not work?
Contact support on WhatsApp or email with your order number. A verified technical issue that cannot be solved within 24 hours is covered by our refund guarantee (terms apply).
